Leap Day

Leap Day is a once-every-four-year event, and it also means that March is about to arrive, and with it, the hope of Spring. I think this shot reflects my hopes for the impending Spring.

Annoying though the crow may have been, ultimately he did not thwart my attempt to shoot the flicker…

I was trying to get a shot of a shy flicker, and every time I would get close, this jerk would start squawking and scare my quarry away.

Iguana Glamour

Oh Mr. DeMille – I’m ready for my head shot.

Buh-bye 500px, Hello 72dpi

I use SmugMug now as the general gallery for Techniverse, but for a while now I’ve been using 500px to display what I consider to be my best work. Unfortunately, I absolutely loathe the rating system they use. In spite of that, I kept using it because other than the rating system, it was a pretty good site. Then came the site update. I got no idea what the hell they were thinking, but whatever features that did attract me are either gone or seriously screwed up. I mean, come on now – stories? I don’t have any goddamn stories to tell. I post PICTURES! And what in God’s name is Flow? If I click on the Flow from my profile page, all I see there is that I joined 6 months ago. If I go to the 500px home page, the flow there contains shit like “So-and-So just liked 2 pictures” or “So-and-So just commented on a picture”. Great – another Facebook wannabe. I’m sorry, but screw that. Social media is great – I am admittedly addicted to Google+, but I want social where it’s appropriate – not on a photo portfolio site. So, I say all that to get to this – I’m done with 500px.

Problem is, I still wanted a site where I could post my best stuff for comment and critique. Luckily, most-excellent photographer and fellow Coloradan and G+er John De Bord has been evangelizing a relatively new site called 72dpi. I checked it out today, and the funny thing is that it’s a lot like 500px was before the update, with what I hope is a better rating system. It’s still in beta, but one thing that immediately attracted me was that they actually [GASP] ask for user suggestions! So I signed up (and get this – I actually scored the user name “Howard”!) and uploaded mostly the same stuff I had at 500px, with a few additions. We’ll see what happens, but I’m already liking it a lot. Anyway, if you wanna check it out, I’m at

Old and New

This is a composite of two shots taken 10 years apart at the Butterfly Pavilion. The newer image was of the leaf and background, and the butterfly was pulled from a shot taken in 2001, but the background visible in the image was just concrete walls and pipes.

Monsters Attack

I’ve been watching way too many old Godzilla movies…

Formation Flying – Gimme an L!

This gull was trying to land in the water, but the wind was blowing so hard all he could do was hover.

Going Up

I’ve probably spent more time editing this shot than I have any shot ever before. I’m not even sure why. Anyway, this was shot last summer at the Downtown Aquarium. I posted some pics at the time, but I never messed with this one until now.

Mountain Peaks

This was shot from Crown Hill Park. My goal was to impart a stormy feel, even though it was bright and sunny with just some fluffy white clouds.
